Rano Leads Joint Assembly to Address Traffic Issues

Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno led a joint assembly to address traffic congestion at the South Plaza of Monas, Gambir, Central Jakarta.

"Today we are holding a joint assembly ,"

The assembly involved 2,141 personnel from Transportation Agency, Police, Military, Public Works Agency, Water Resources Agency, Fire and Rescue Agency, Jakarta Satpol PP, as well as the Transportation Agencies of Bogor City, Bogor Regency, Bekasi City, Depok City, South Tangerang City, and Tangerang City.

"Today we are holding a joint assembly because we believe it's time for Jakarta to be managed together. This collaboration isn't just among agencies. We also hope the public can take part in it," he said on Wednesday (8/27).

Rano explained that the public can participate in easing traffic by shifting from private vehicles to public transportation. If more people switch to public transit, it is believed to have a significant impact on reducing congestion.

Based on existing data, he noted that public transportation usage needs to be optimized. Of the 20.2 million daily trips in Jakarta, only about 22.19 percent are made using public transportation.

Meanwhile, data from the Jakarta Metro Police Traffic Directorate shows that the average vehicle growth rate in Jakarta is 2.70 percent per year, while the road expansion rate is only around 0.01 percent per year.

"As a result, the growing number of vehicles continues to overwhelm the limited road space," he stressed.

Rano acknowledged that efforts to ease traffic congestion have become more complex. For this reason, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung believes it is time for the Jakarta Provincial Government to collaborate with stakeholders and regional leaders to address Jakarta's traffic issues.

He pointed out that areas surrounding Jakarta also have a vested interest in tackling congestion, as many of their residents commute to Jakarta for work, which contributes to traffic not only in Jakarta but in their own regions as well.

As part of the solution, Rano explained that the Jakarta Government has initiated the TransJabodetabek program to encourage people to switch to public transportation. In addition, the government is also developing an AI-based Intelligent Traffic Control System (ITCS), which has already been implemented at 65 out of 321 intersections.

Rano stated that the system has proven effective in reducing vehicle waiting times by 15–20 percent, while also serving as a basis for monitoring vehicle taxes and emissions.

In addition, collaboration with the Jakarta Metropolitan Police through Mandala Quick Response enables real-time traffic monitoring based on a Geographic Information System, integrated with CCTV owned by the Jakarta Provincial Government. In the future, the system will be expanded so that its benefits can be more widely felt by the public.

Rano emphasized that tackling traffic congestion is not only about improving mobility, but also concerns the economy, business, tourism, public health, and overall quality of life.

Furthermore, in accordance with Law No. 2/2024, Jakarta has been designated as the center of the national economy and a global city, with a target to rank among the top 50 global cities by 2030, from its current position at 74.

"Hopefully, this joint assembly marks the beginning of a shared responsibility in managing transportation in Jakarta," he asserted.
